A night in Newport County is capped at $274 in June, July and August 2027, 1.8 times the $150 that applies from November to May, while Providence and Bristol counties keep one cap of $161 for the whole of FY2027. Both listed areas pay $80 of meals and incidentals per day, against the standard $68 in the rest of Rhode Island, where lodging stops at $113. These rates run from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027. For a concrete case, three nights in Newport from July 12 to July 15, 2027 add up to $1,102 at the federal maximum: $822 for the rooms and $280 of M&IE, with the arrival and departure days paid at 75%. The same dates in February 2027 come to $730. Lodging taxes sit on top of these figures, and receipts still decide what the room line pays.

Newport's three bands of lodging

GSA writes the coastal area as Jamestown, Middletown and Newport, and the county behind it is Newport. Its FY2027 calendar has three levels. June, July and August carry $274. October and September sit in between at $236. The other seven months, November, December, January, February, March, April and May, drop to $150. Each band moved up from FY2026: the summer cap by $6, the in-between months by $18, the long off season by $9. A booking that runs from the last week of August into September crosses from one cap to the next, so the nights are priced separately.

Providence and Bristol: no season at all

The second area, Providence / Bristol, holds $161 in every month of FY2027, $7 more than its flat $154 of FY2026. In July, a Providence stay of three nights totals $763, or $339 less than Newport for the same dates; in February the order flips and Providence pays more, since the Newport cap falls below it. Warwick, the one Rhode Island city of 15,000 people or more on the Census list that is not in either area, sits in Kent County and takes $113 and $68, like every other county GSA leaves out.

Meals are the same in both listed areas: $20 for breakfast, $22 for lunch, $33 for dinner and $5 of incidentals. A lunch served at a Providence meeting removes $22 from that day, as the M&IE breakdown shows.

Home charging at Rhode Island power prices

For anyone reimbursed by the mile in an electric car, the local power price matters more than the gasoline one. Rhode Island residential electricity averaged 29.22 cents per kWh over January to July 2026 in EIA data, against 18.19 cents for the country, so charging at home costs about 61% more per mile than the national average. Gasoline is priced in EIA's New England (PADD 1A) series, $4.343 a gallon in the week of October 5, 2026, close to the $4.354 U.S. figure. The IRS rate of 76 cents a mile is the same for both cars; the EV charging cost calculator shows how much of it the power bill eats.

Questions travelers ask

What is the Newport, Rhode Island per diem in July 2027?

$274 of lodging per night and $80 of M&IE per day. The summer cap covers June, July and August 2027 under GSA's FY2027 table. On the day you arrive and the day you leave, M&IE is $60.00. In October and September the room cap is $236, and from November to May it is $150.

Does Warwick, Rhode Island have its own GSA per diem?

No. Warwick is in Kent County, which GSA does not list, so a federal traveler there gets the standard CONUS rate of $113 for lodging and $68 for M&IE in FY2027. Only Newport County (Jamestown, Middletown, Newport) and Providence and Bristol counties have higher Rhode Island rates. A hotel just over the line in Providence County takes $161.

Why is the M&IE the same in Newport and Providence, Rhode Island?

GSA puts both Rhode Island areas in the $80 tier for FY2027, so meals pay the same wherever you stay in those counties: $20, $22 and $33 plus $5 of incidentals. What differs is lodging, which in Newport depends on the month and in Providence does not. The standard tier elsewhere in the state is $68.

Is charging an electric car in Rhode Island expensive for mileage claims?

Yes, relative to the country. EIA puts Rhode Island residential power at 29.22 cents per kWh for January to July 2026, against 18.19 cents nationally. At 30 kWh per 100 miles that is $8.77 of electricity per 100 miles at home. The IRS business rate is still 76 cents a mile, so the claim does not change with the power price.
