Missouri per diem in FY2027 has two lines above the standard. St. Louis, which covers St. Louis County, St. Louis City and St. Charles County, pays $156 a night and $86 of M&IE. Kansas City, for Jackson, Clay, Cass and Platte counties, pays $139 and $80. Neither changes by month. Every other county, including those of Springfield, Columbia and Jefferson City, takes the standard $113 and $68. The rates run from October 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027. On a Monday-to-Friday trip from June 7 to 11, 2027, St. Louis is worth $1,011.00 at the federal maximum and Kansas City $916.00, a gap of $95.00, split between $68 of lodging and $27.00 of meals. St. Louis sits one meal tier above Kansas City

Lodging in the two metros differs by $17 a night, but the meal tier is where the claim drifts apart over a long assignment. St. Louis is on $86, Kansas City on $80. Over 5 travel days, with the first and last at 75%, the M&IE gap reaches $27.00. The GSA breakdown also changes what comes off for a provided dinner: $36 in St. Louis, $33 in Kansas City. This year St. Louis gained $6 on lodging, from $150, and Kansas City $4, from $135.

A county and a city, filed as one area

GSA names St. Louis County and St. Louis City separately in the county column, then joins them in one area with St. Charles County. In practice the rate is the same in St. Louis, O'Fallon, St. Charles and St. Peters. At the other end of the state, Kansas City, Independence, Lee's Summit and Blue Springs take the Kansas City figure. The Kansas line across the state border, Kansas City / Overland Park, carries the identical $139 and $80, so the Kansas page reads the same numbers from the other bank.

Springfield, Columbia and St. Joseph: no line of their own

Springfield (Greene County), Columbia (Boone County), St. Joseph (Buchanan County), Joplin (Jasper County) and Jefferson City (Cole County) are among the larger Missouri cities without an area, so they get $113 and $68. Diesel in the EIA Midwest series cost $6.286 a gallon in the week of October 5, 2026, against $6.199 nationally. Drivers in the transportation industry do not use the GSA table for meals: the IRS special rate is $80 a day anywhere in the continental United States, with 80% deductible for workers under hours-of-service rules. The truck driver per diem page works through a year of those days, including the $5 incidentals-only rate for days with no meal cost.

GSA per diem files. Lodging is the nightly maximum; seasonal areas change by month. The five M&IE tiers did not change between the two years; an area can still move from one tier to another.

Questions travelers ask

Why is the St. Louis, Missouri M&IE higher than Kansas City?

GSA places each area on one of 5 meal tiers. For FY2027 St. Louis is on $86 and Kansas City on $80. The difference is $6 on a full day and $4.50 on a travel day. Lodging is $156 and $139 respectively, flat all year.

Does St. Charles, Missouri get the St. Louis per diem?

Yes. St. Charles County is part of the St. Louis GSA area along with St. Louis County and St. Louis City, so St. Charles, O'Fallon and St. Peters are paid $156 a night and $86 of M&IE in FY2027. Jefferson and Franklin counties are not listed and take the standard $113 and $68.

What per diem applies in Springfield or Columbia, Missouri?

The standard CONUS rate. Greene County (Springfield) and Boone County (Columbia) are not GSA areas, so a trip there in FY2027 pays $113 of lodging and $68 of M&IE a day, $51.00 on the first and last day. Only the St. Louis and Kansas City areas are higher in Missouri.
